Vasily Lomachenko was born on February 17, 1988 in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Odessa region, in the family of coaches Anatoly and Tatyana. He learned the basics of the “sweet science” from the late coach Joseph Katz, then his father began training the athlete.
Lomachenko's first international success came in 2004, when he won the European Cadet Championship (under 16 years old) and became the best boxer in the competition. In 2006, Vasily repeated his achievement, winning the Youth World Championship.
At his first adult world championship in 2007, Lomachenko reached the final, where he lost to Russian Albert Selimov on points. The 2011 Licensed World Championship is taking place in Baku. Here Lomachenko becomes a two-time world champion. At the stage of the 1/8 finals, the judges evaluate Lomachenko’s fight in favor of the Brazilian Robson Conceicao, but after a protest from the Ukrainian side, the decision of the fight is unprecedentedly changed to a victory for Lomachenko.
In London, Lomachenko receives his second Olympic gold medal and in the fall agrees to participate in the third season of the semi-professional league, the World Series of Boxing, where he reaches the final with the Ukrainian Atamans team. In the summer of 2013, Lomachenko signed a professional contract with Top Rank and in October he fought his debut fight, which is planned for 10 rounds and with one of the minor titles at stake.

Vasily Lomachenko is married and has a son, Anatoly, and a daughter, Victoria. Between fights, Lomachenko continues to live in his native Belgorod-Dnestrovsky and goes to training camps in the USA only for the final stage of preparation for fights.

The fight between Vasily Lomachenko and Venezuelan Jorge Linares will happen! The promotion company Top Rank officially announced this today on its website. There have been rumors about this for a long time, but on March 21 everything became clear: the Ukrainian is moving up to a heavier weight category and will fight the current world champion. The WBO belt in the weight category up to 59 kg still remains with Lomachenko, but if he wins on May 12, Vasya will be forced to leave it vacant. Well, it’s not a pity, especially since Lomachenko already did this when he moved from weight to 57.2 kg 3 years ago, sacrificing the WBO world champion belt.
The fight will take place in the “Mecca of Boxing”, on the main arena of the New York complex Madison Square Garden, and this fight risks being called “Fight of the Year”. Even taking into account the fact that on May 11 in Saudi Arabia Vasya’s friend and godfather will fight for 4 championship belts in the weight category up to 91 (in the final of the World Super Series of Boxing), Alexander Usik.
